Die Vision der Gründungsväter
Das Kimbell Art Museum wurde offiziell am 4. Oktober 1972 eröffnet. Die Kimbell Art Foundation, die Eigentümerin und Betreiberin des Museums ist, wurde 1936 von Kay und Velma Kimbell sowie Kays Schwester und deren Ehemann, Dr. und Mrs. Coleman Carter, gegründet. Zu Beginn sammelte die Stiftung vor allem britische und französische Porträts aus dem achtzehnten und neunzehnten Jahrhundert. Als Herr Kimbell im April 1964 starb, war die Sammlung auf 260 Gemälde und 86 andere Kunstwerke angewachsen, darunter so einzigartige Gemälde wie Hals' Rommel-Topfspieler, Gainsboroughs Frauenporträt, Vigée Le Bruns Selbstporträt und Leightons Porträt von May Sartoris. Mit dem Wunsch, "die Kunst in Fort Worth und Texas zu fördern", vermachte Herr Kimbell seinen Nachlass der Stiftung und beauftragte sie mit der Einrichtung eines Museums. Herr Kimbell hatte seinen Wunsch deutlich gemacht, dass das künftige Museum "erstklassig" sein sollte, und um dieses Ziel zu erreichen, brachte seine Witwe Velma innerhalb einer Woche nach seinem Tod ihren Anteil am Gemeinschaftsvermögen in die Stiftung ein.
